Tet Holiday is a celebration of Vietnam’s Lunar New Year. It is one of the most important holidays for Vietnamese to celebrate with traditional parties, fireworks and delicious food.
Tet’s holiday celebrations are similar to other Asian Lunar New Year celebrations, but also reflect Vietnam’s individual values, history and culture.
The lunar calendar marks the beginning of spring and the new year. There are many Tet festivals throughout the year, but the festival celebrating Lunar New Year is the most important for Vietnamese.

Secondly, decorating the house. It is an occasion for all members to prepare new items and furniture. The most popular ones have the red and yellow colors, linked to wealth and luck. We can buy many things to decorate the house , such as: flowers, peach blossom trees, kumquat trees, colorful lights,…
It makes our house look beautiful and refreshed. Next, “remaking” yourself. You can “remake” yourself by cutting new hair, buying new clothes, new shoes,…It makes you look better and more confident with everyone on Tet holiday.
Finally, We often make traditional Vietnamese cake- Banh Chung or Banh Day made from sticky rice, green beans and fatty fork. It takes hours to cook the cakes. Meanwhile, we prefer telling our life stories, events, news, etc., of the past year, sharing and mingling with each other.
Tet holiday is an occasion for us to be close with our family, relatives. I really like Tet holiday.

- Xông đất (Step into the house)
Tet holiday is the most important celebration for Vietnamese people. Among the many rituals connected with the Lunar New Year in Vietnam is xong dat, or “first-footing”. People believe that the first person who enters a house at the beginning of a lunar year will have a bearing on the family’s fortune throughout that year. Thus, the rich and popular are usually invited to get into a home at that time.
- Mừng tuổi & Đi thăm họ hàng, người thân, bạn bè (Give lucky money & Visit relatives and friends)
In the morning of the Tet holiday, relatives and friends visit and wish each other a Happy New Year, the children normally think of “Li xi” or lucky money. They will give each other best wishes and give the children some lucky money. Lucky money is the money which is given to children to welcome the new age on the first day of Lunar New Year. It is a common belief that money can bring good fortune to the upcoming year.
- Xuất hành đầu năm (To depart)
On the first day of the Lunar New Year, people often choose beautiful hours and bring the best of wealth as well as the appropriate direction of age to depart with the hope of having luck and peace when leaving the house.
- Đi chùa (Visit pagoda/temple)
A typical cultural feature of Vietnamese people is that the custom of going to the temple during the first days of the new year is a beauty of spiritual culture in every Vietnamese life. Incense to worship the temple at the beginning of the year is not only to pray for a new year of luck and happiness, but also to express your mind and respect to the Buddha and ancestors.
- Đi du lịch ngày nay (Traveling trend)
Vietnamese will have some days off during Tet but they do not travel much during this time. It is the time for everyone to gather with their family, return to their hometown and have a long time for relaxation without any worries of life. Tet is considered as the time of happiness all over Vietnam. However, some people decide to travel. Only at this time, they can have a chance to join the local unique activities that only happen once a year.
There are a lot of taboos you should never do during lunar new year.
– Firstly, you shouldn’t say or do bad things during Tet holiday.
– Secondly, You shouldn’t sweep the house or empty out the rubbish to avoid luck and benefits going with it, especially on the first day of the new year.
– Next, You shouldn’t have duck meat because it brings unluckiness and shouldn’t buy or wear white clothes because white is the colour of funerals in Vietnam.
In many countries, especially in Viet Nam, people spend a lot of money celebrating Tet holiday – Vietnamese Lunar New Year. However, some people think that spending a lot of money on these celebrations is a waste. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
Lunar New Year in Vietnam traditionally lasts for three days, but people in Vietnam often spend nearly half of a month celebrating the festival. They spend lots of time and money on decorating their house beautifully with kumquat trees, peach blossoms, or apricot blossoms. And very often, all these will be thrown away in a couple of weeks. Additionally, everyone has their hair cut, buys new clothes, and brings gifts to their relatives. Especially, they prepare so many kinds of food such as Chung Cake, pickled onion, pickled cabbage, Vietnamese sausage, pork, beef, five-fruit trays, etc. All those preparations have the same purpose – to be the best to welcome the Lunar New Year festival and to receive luck as well as fortune.
Nevertheless, what really gets to me is the amount of wastage that I see every year, my mum included. They buy so much that they aren’t able to consume all of them. As a result, most of them are rotten and people must throw them away after 2-3 weeks. This also creates a huge amount of garbage after Tet holiday.
In conclusion, the celebration of the cultural ceremony is significant for preserving the tradition and culture of a community. However, we need to prepare for Tet just right with our needs to avoid waste.
- Xu hướng Tết ngày nay: mua bánh chưng, đi du lịch, không giữ Tết cổ truyền.
Tet holiday – Vietnamese Lunar New Year is the most significant festival in the S-shaped country. Year after year, the Tet celebration has changed significantly, so have Vietnamese people been remaining traditional activities on Tet holiday?
According to Vietnamese tradition, Tet Holiday is an occasion for every family to come together and enjoy traditional food, such as banh chung (glutinous rice cake), gio (pork sausage) and dua hanh (pickled onion). Otherwise, in recent years, the ways Vietnamese enjoy the Tet holiday have changed much.
Today, many Vietnamese families don’t cook Chung cakes themselves. They wonder: “Why should we have to suffer from cold water and bend our backs to wash dong leaves and green beans? Why do we need to stay awake to watch the pot of cakes, when we can easily buy them from food shops or markets?”.
Besides that, many people, especially the young who love travelling, in recent years have chosen to travel rather than stay at home to cook, clean their house and prepare for Tet. Some people think that they’ve worked hard for a year, so they should take their time to travel and relax. They do not care as much about traditional ways of celebrating Tet as well.
To sum up, people will choose the activities that suit them. They adapt to fit the socio-cultural context, particularly in the current times. For me, Tet is still a meaningful occasion for family reunion.
- Có nên duy trì Tết cổ truyền? ( Vì lãng phí thời gian)
I think we should celebrate Tet holiday because of the following reasons:
– It’s the best occasion for family members to return home and get together.
– This is also an opportunity that people to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of spring, traditional dishes, tradition festivals, folk games and so on.
– Vietnamese can express their gratitude to their ancestors and benefactors.
IV. Open ended questions (Câu hỏi mở rộng thuyết trình tiếng Anh ngày Tết).
1. On Tet holiday, many housewives often have the psychology to buy a lot of goods to prevent supermarkets or markets from reopening. However, hoarding too much food for many days. What do you think about it?
“We have worked really hard all year to get bonus month 13rd. So Tet holiday is the time for us to reward ourselves by buying new clothes, new shoes, new furniture for a new year. So next year, we have motivation to earn more money. By the way, the end of the year is the best chance for us to go shopping because sales are everywhere. Up to 50 percent or 70 percent.
Besides, not only me but many people work far away from home, so we usually come back home to visit parents and relatives on Tet holiday. So for me, buying goods, foods for them is normal, even though they are expensive. About my parents, they have not seen me and their grandchildren for such a long time, so they usually buy a lot of food to make up for long time no see us.
And the most important reason is in Vietnam culture, on Tet holiday, we need to buy food for a full year”.
“My mom and some neighbors buy a lot of food. However, hoarding too much food for many days, especially for green vegetables, fruits … will easily lead to food dehydration, rot, damage, deformation, metamorphosis … It’s so dangerous to swallow. As a result, most of them are rotten and people must throw them away after 2-3 weeks. So I think they should just buy enough.
Moreover, they spend lots of time and money on decorating their house beautifully with kumquat trees, peach blossoms, or apricot blossoms. And very often, all these will be thrown away in a couple of weeks. Nevertheless, what really gets to me is the amount of wastage that I see every year, my mum included. This also creates a huge amount of garbage after Tet holiday”.
2. Should we keep Tet holiday?
Tet is the biggest and the most important holiday in Vietnam. It is a great occasion for families to gather together and enjoy relaxing times off. But some people have piped up online, arguing that Tet is old-fashioned and should be canceled if Vietnam wants to be a modern country. What is your opinion?
“There are some disadvantages of Tet from an economical point of view. Now that the holiday is long, it damages the economic power and also the labor. It is true that some workers are not motivated to work after spending so many days off. This is true to students.
On the other hand, the overflow vehicle causes congestion and traffic accidents.
Some other social issues are also increasing rapidly at this time especially drinking, speeding and gambling.
Last but not least, since the end of the year means that there are tons of problems to worry about, the stress of paying debt or getting the ticket to go home also add up significantly to the pressure among Tet”.
“Adults have worked for almost a year; we should have long days off for Tet holiday to relax ourselves before working for the next hard year. It’s also the time for us to look back on our previous year to see how we’ve developed ourselves and to focus more or change our career if it’s necessary.
By the way, Tet is a special point of Vietnamese culture, it reflects not only our culture, it’s also our history – a history of standing to defend attackers for hundreds of years. We should not forget about our history, or even how the modern life we will become. That is why we should keep it as our honor.”
